Guide: Setting Up Your iPhone with DiGi (Surfing, MMS, Tethering)
Update April 16 2010:
Good news, DiGi iPhone users! You don’t have to go through the trouble of configuring your iPhone anymore!
Just insert your DiGi SIMcard into your iPhone, turn in on, and plug into your computer. Start iTunes and it will alert you that there’s carrier update available, and choose to Update. Once you’ve done this, restart your iPhone, and all your Internet Tethering, Web Surfing and MMS will be pre-configured!
Does this work on a Maxis iPhone with DiGi simcard? Absolutely yes! Because I am using one myself!

DiGi announced that they are going to start carrying iPhone 3GS and 3G. In fact they are already taking pre-orders for those who are interested. The plan and price remains a mystery though.

I’ve been using DiGi with iPhone ever since the first generation iPhone hits Malaysia (grey market, of course), and even after Maxis started officially carrying iPhone in Malaysia, I managed to get my hands on one of the iPhone 3G unit. Good thing is, that the unit is unlocked, so you can use it with any carrier in Malaysia.
I thought I’d share a few configuration tips for DiGi users to have the best experience with the iPhone (yes, for those who can’t wait). I’m sure by the time DiGi have the unit launched officially, they will take care of the configurations on these units.
Note: I’m using a DiGi postpaid plan, along with the unlimited 3G access, so before you proceed with these steps (especially the Internet Tethering), do check your plans if you do not want some unexpected charges on the usage of data.
Configuring MMS and Tethering on the iPhone for DiGi
Oh, in case you don’t know what “Tethering” means, it means using your iPhone as a modem so you can get connected via 3G/EDGE
This step is pretty straight forward, access the Settings app on your iPhone, and navigate to General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network.

On this configuration page, you will notice there’s three parts of the configuration, named Cellular Data, MMS and Internet Tethering.
Now let’s set them up one by one
Section 1: Cellular Data
On this section it is simple, the configurations are as follows:
APN: diginet
Username: (leave blank)
Password: (leave blank)
Once this section is configured, you can surf with the iPhone mobile Safari browser, enabled Push Notifications, and basically any app in the iPhone will be able to access the Internet (there are exceptions, like some app might specifically require WiFi connections).
Section 2: MMS
I’ve tried a few configurations, but these are the one that I find working flawlessly:
APN: digimms
Username: mms
Password: mms
MMSC: mms.digi.com.my/servlets/mms
MMS Proxy: 203.92.128.160
MMS Max Message Size: 200000 (i think you can set up as high as 300000 – this is in bytes, but I want my MMS to send faster so I’m sticking with 200000)
MMS UA Prof URL: (leave blank)
After you have configured this, you will notice that there’s a camera icon in your SMS compose area, tapping on this icon will allow you to attach an image to the message, which the iPhone will send as MMS automatically. If you don’t see this icon immediately, you might have to restart your iPhone.
Section 3: Internet Tethering
This section will allow you to configure the Access Point Name (APN) that you’re going to use to access the Internet while the iPhone acts as a modem. For DiGi, it is the same as the one used for Cellular Data (kudos to simplicity in configuration!). Set it up as follows:
APN: diginet
Username: (leave blank)
Password: (leave blank)
Congratulations! Your iPhone is now fully configures to access the Internet, send and receive MMS, as well as act as a modem for your computer to access the Internet!
How to access the Internet with the iPhone as a modem (Tethering) with DiGi
This step is simple, first, make sure the lastest version of iTunes is installed in your computer (you don’t need to run iTunes to connect to the Internet, but the iTunes installer also will install the networking driver needed to use your iPhone as a modem).
Next, setup your iPhone to enable Internet Tethering:
Go to Settings -> General -> Network -> Internet Tethering.

On this page, slide the “Internet Tethering” switch to “ON“, and it will ask you whether you want to tether via bluetooth or USB. I pick USB as tethering uses a lot of battery power, so connecting it via USB will ensure the iPhone remains charged.

Now, connect your iPhone to your computer, and you will notice after a while, the iPhone will start showing a flashing blue bar with the word “Internet Tethering“, this means your iPhone is now connected to the Internet and you can surf with your computer through it!

Important Notice
Since I obtained by iPhone from Maxis, when I plug my iPhone, iTunes will tell me that there’s a “Carrier Update” and asked me whether I want to update my configurations:

I cancel this message, as I’ve found out that if I accepted the update, it will setup my iPhone with Maxis configuration, which will render my MMS and Tethering inoperable. Be aware of this for now, until DiGi officially releases the iPhone configuration!

thanks for the detailed guide.. how i wish i own an iphone as well =)
hi, i bought this phone from singapore, and i do not see the Internet Tethering at all.. how can i get it?
What I did is that I turn my phone to DFU mode and restore it to a normal firmware, but I prevent the "Carrier Update" from being installed in iTunes (read above, I mentioned it). Then I restore it again with the jailbroken firmware. As long as you dont update the carrier, the settings on the iPhone will be as stock.
If the Tethering option has dissapeared, just put ur original carrier’s sim back in n it will reappear. After that, put in ur new sim n set up the new settings as above. That’s what I do with my Maxis 3Gs.
Is the guide for tethering to Mac or PC?
OMG…..i using digi line and i already upgrade the “Carrier Update” , now the mms cannot send , how can i delect the “carrier update” , pls help ??
how can i delect the "carrier update" ,if i already update it ??
I have key in diginet.. But still cant surf the net.. I bought this phone at sgp and its jailbreak.. Pls advice.. Already register with digi..
i've accidently updated the carrier, the cellular data network no longer appear in my phone. Im unable to key in the APN setting manually therefore im unable to send any mms.. is there any solution ?
I'm using PC with Windows 7, it should be the same if you have Windows 7 on your Mac as well, and I'm pretty sure the guides are the same if you are using OSX
I don't know of any workaround to remove the carrier update. What I did was I restored the phone to factory state in DFU mode.
Strange, You might want to try restoring? Because some jailbroken phones can act weird.
The only way I can think of is to restore the phone in the DFU mode
Hi there..nice guide :)
Can anyone help me to resolve this?
Case 1: Inserted my Maxis sim card, I can have internet tethering but I cant access to cellular data (which means i cant send MMS).
Case 2: Inserted my Digi sim card, can configure the cellular data (can send MMS) but cant have internet tethering.
How to resolve this???
Thanks….

Just take note that Email, Safari and some apps will use the internet regardless, so if you setup the 'diginet' in the APN on the first section, and there is no WiFi available, they will use this settings to access the internet, which you will be charged for. This includes apps like Google Map, Email, Safari, Weather, Stock, etc (any apps that uses data, for that matter)
If you don't want that to happen, delete 'diginet' on the first section.
Hi Firdouss,
Did you get charged for diginet or internet usage charges via digi bill? cos i did get charged eventhough i setup mms and diginet per your note which i found out from some other bloggers earlier. though i didnt setup the internet tethering.. wld this make all the difference as in that digi wont bill me for using the internet via iphone? do know i didnt on my 3g as i dont think one need to as it’s auto connected to the internet via wifi.
awaits your advice patiently… tks heaps!

hi firdouss,
just wondering were u charged for using diginet in your digi bill? cos i did the setup u mentioned earlier except the internet tethering, yet still got charged 2 months in a row. i followed the instructions alike yours from other bloggers much much earlier.
i didnt use 3g as i've only access the internet via wifi and yet i am charged for diginet usage. and all that digi cld tell me was that the iphone is build in a "high-tech" way in order to detect the internet on its on. some bogus cust. service advice. that's it, no other solutions whatsoever. just pay the internet bill usage! lol
kindly advice.. tks!
Nope, because my Postpaid account have a data plan. If yours doesn't have, then they will charge you for it.
DiGi will bill you for any usage as long as youre using the phone through their line. Unless you sign up for some data plan :)
thanks for the info, this is more useful than DiGi's customer reps who couldn't even tell me the correct setting for cellular data
thank u for the kind clarification. though, i have actually deleted diginet from the APN first section, yet i am still being billed for using email? fyi, i mostly use social networking apps. email once a while when i hv good wifi connection. do u think digi still charge for the usage?
what about mms? the digi cust. service centre only set APN digimms under the mms section. i told her that is not gonna work. which indeed it didnt even after waitin for 2 hours and then on and off.
btw, would i get charged for sending mms after setting up like what u share above here? cos if i do. then i really think digi sucks big time. sigh….

Actually, now you don't have to follow these instructions already. DiGi have rolled out a carrier update (which you can get by plugging your phone to a PC/MAC and run iTunes), that automatically configure your iPhone to use the DiGi network (yes any iPhone for that matter, since I'm using ex-maxis' iPhone on a DiGi, and it gets automatically configured).
If you're using an iPhone with normal DiGi postpaid/prepaid account, you will be billed for using data over the network. iPhone constantly use data, especially if you have push notification enabled. Putting 'diginet' on the 'APN' section will make your iPhone connects to data network if it can't find any WiFi connection. If you don't want to be billed, then remove the APN setup.
Turning 3G on and off doesn't make any difference, as by turning 3G off, the phone will still be connected via EDGE.
If you don't want to be billed weirdly, subscribe to their RM58 internet plan (which is what I did), and don't worry about any unexpected charges.
i cant find Cellular Data Network in my iphone, im using digi plan…..why arh?? can help??
Hi, Wondering howcome your status bar has the MB displayed beside the clock? It would be helpful to share it out so we could track our internet usage without the need to go into settings>general>network>usage to check the usage. Thanks.
That’s not data downloaded/transferred. It’s showing the current free RAM of the iPhone. You can get that by jailbreaking the iPhone and install SBSettings on it :)
Hi Firdouss…
Regarding question throw by Winnie (April 2, 2010), I own Iphone bought from Maxis without restriction (using Hotlink). At the same time I have DiGi broadband plan unlimited (Rm88 per mth @ 10Gb) which I use with my Iphone. Everything is fine until a day when I connect my phone through Itunes with DiGi simcard. A prompt came out out for carrier update, which I did click UPDATE (big mistake). Since then, I do not have internet access for my Iphone (even go to Apps Store or anything to do with network access) when I inserted DiGi simcard. It shows “Could not activate cellular data network – You are not subscribed to a cellular data service”. This happens when my OS is 3.1.2. Thought a restore will fix it, therefore I click restore and later was asked to update to OS4. I did that but even after an update, the same problem happens. When I use Maxis, everything is okay. Can you please help me? Thanks!
THX!!!
can u help me how to configure for samsung galaxy s i9000?
yoo bro, love your website so much!
very very informative~~ keep good work!
I followed this instructions but still "Tethering" did not show up.
solution:
I let iTunes update my carrier settings and "Tethering" showed up. That fixed my problem.
I am using iPhone 3G from SG using Digi postpaid
Actually, if you read the first paragraph properly, I already mentioned about this solution *wink*
Great page, but wish i’d have read this sooner. I’ve accidentally updated my carrier settings and now I can’t see my “cellular data” settings anymore. Also, MMS & voicemail is a problem.
Any ideas how to rectify this so I can manually key in network settings?
Managed to get 3G through unlockit.co.nz tho
Am on 3GS 3.1.3 and trying to avoid iOS4. Thanks
