Fixing Windows Live Messenger 8100030F Error

I don’t know if you guys face this problem. Under a certain network setup my Windows Live Messenger (version 2009, the latest at the point of this post) refuses to connect and keep on saying there was a problem connecting, and give me the error code 8100030F.

I checked out on Windows Live Help Site and to my surprise, this error code isn’t mentioned anywhere in the website.

So after a few rounds of testing and changing some settings, I found out there’s a problem with hostname resolution during the connecting process. So with a few DNS wizardry and some lookups, I manage to apply a quick fix and now my Windows Live Messenger works like a charm anywhere!

Note: You need to be an administrator or have administrator access to be able to apply this fix

Edit your Windows host file

Browse to “C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\”, and you’ll see a file named “hosts”. Open up this file with Notepad and add the following line after the last entry:

65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com

Now try connecting again. This works instantly for me. I’m using MS Windows Vista Enterprise (32 bit) and Windows Live Messenger 2009 (build 14).

Hi Folks, wonder if anyone can help me. I tried to edit the Hosts file with Notepad. However, I was unable to save it. System kept prompting me a message ” Cannot create the C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\host.msn”. “Make sure that the path and filename are correct”

Would appreciate your kind assistance! Cheers

    awesome! worked great for me!!!

Marcus — be sure to change the properties for that file before you add anything to it..

    1. Right click the file, go to properties
    2. Uncheck “read-only”
    3. Open “hosts” in notepad
    4. Edit file to add in “65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com”
    5. Close and save
    6. Right click file and go to properties
    7. Check “read-only” box.
    8. Hit ok..

That should do it! Thanks for the help on this! I couldnt find the error for the life of me and it was starting to get irritating.. :)

    Thanks!
    Kat

It worked for me – for 2 days only.

Now I’m getting Key Ports & Hosts error. Clicking Repair will remove the “65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com” and I will not have Hosts error but still have Key Ports err.

Windows should publish the steps to fix it. It’s not even in it’s website.
