How To: Resize Vista's Desktop Icon

There are two ways to resize the desktop icon in Windows Vista. One of the ways is to use one of the three defined sizes:

Right-click on any blank space in your Desktop, and choose “View“, then pick one of the three “Large“, “Medium” or “Classic” size (they correspond to 80px, 48px and 32px respectively). However, these pre-defined sizes might not suit what you need. There is another way to resize the icons.

Resize Desktop Icons to your liking

The trick is simple – hold down your Ctrl key, and rotate your mouse scroll wheel up or down. You’ll notice the icons grew/shrink. You can resize your desktop icons to a whooping 256px!

I don’t know if anyone would use that icon for everyday use, but it is certainly fun to see the icons at that scale.

To reset your icons back to their original size, you can Right-click again on the desktop, and choose View -> Medium Icons.

I use [Ctrl + mouse scroll up/down] to dynamically change the size of icon, plus, you have the freedom to resize it way beyond the preset Large/Medium/Classic; from a teeny 16×16 to a whopping 265×256.

This works, except for some reason any IE Links or shortcuts change when you resize them with the mousewheel method. Does anyone know of a FIX for this? I have had this issue forever and microsoft does not seem to have ever released an update to fix it. It’s a stupid bug within Vista. They actually will look fine when you perform the resizing but then seconds later they change to some odd default. Depends on which icon I choose in Properties Change Icon. Some don’t change others do. Usually the blue E with ring around it is the one that won’t stay. If I change it to that one, it also seems to change to a icon of 2 lcd monitors. Never to what you want.
Again it isn’t all of them that change, but all are shortcuts or links to websites.
email me an answer at kb45@ymail.com if you want. Please no spam etc…
