N70
Few weeks back, I was on the mission of getting a new mobile phone for my old man. And after reading hundreds on reviews and hearing comments from enthusiasts, I’ve boiled down the choices for him to either 6630 or N70 (personally, I’d go for 6630 since it’s so cheap!) – however, my old man got interested in the N70′s shape and the 2MP camera. So yeah, to make it short, he gave me the cash and I go hunt.
Got an AP set for him, for around RM 1500 (full set) for the phone and around RM300 or the acessories (inclusive of Bluetooth headset and a 512MB DV-RS-MMC memory card).
However things turn unexpectedly to my advantage, my dad bought a phone for my mom earlier and she doesn’t like it because it was so confusing to her, compared to her current one (some old nokia 11xx i think). So my dad said “I’ll use her phone, and you can have mine – till the day I want it back”
I was happy, because I got a new toy for no reason (albeit I’m a little unhappy with the end part of the deal).
So, I started to fiddle with the phone a little bit more (I was already fiddling with it the moment I got my hands on it). And after a while I am feeling ‘at home’ with this new toy of mine. Not bad for my first Symbian phone.
What I like about the phone thus far:
- Good application bundle
- Good Orgasmic! (Sorry Albert I had to ‘borrow’ your word, I just couldn’t find any other word that can describe these lovely pair of earphones!) sound via the bundled headphones
- Edge functionality (i’m using DiGi, so 3G is no no for now – not like its any better anyways)
- Pretty decent 2MP camera (with somewhat fragile-feeling spring-loaded slide cover to keep the lens protected) – See sample photos taken below.
What I don’t like about the phone thus far:
- Kind of slow at times (generally most s60 Symbian phones are slower than their s40 counterpart, but there’s extra slowness sometimes on this one).
(I’ve figured out that if you set the logging history down to either 1 or 10 days from the default 30 days, it speeds up the phone a lot. Stay away from Kingston’s DV-RS-MMC cards for this phone. These two aren’t meant to pair together)
- Buzzer (the speaker) is kind of sucky (Okay, okay, I admit that I’ve been spoiled by some of Motorola’s speakers. It’s actually not THAT bad)
I know its not the most cutting edge phone (no pun intended), but hey, it’s the smartphone I’m beginning to love a lot!.

It seems that there’s a bit of post-processing being done by the phone before the image is saved – either that or my eyes deceive me, because it does appear that they are somewhat “smart-blurred” a little.

Whoa. The quality of the image looks almost the same with mine ( although they said that they’re using ‘Carl Zeiss’ lens ).
I’ll say that your n70 pwned my n90 because mine dun have the vibration function.

Hmm yes, it does look like a tad of Smart Blur, lol.
Given some Unsharp Mask and some Desaturation of the blue channel, I guess it could look good. :D
Eh, the loudspeaker is pretty good what. Well I have not compared it to a Sony Ericsson or Motorola, but it sounds fine to me.
That’s the thing – the speaker IS okay, but I’ve spoilt myself with Motorola’s.
But not a big deal I suppose, since most of the time I’m using the orgasmic stereo earphones ::D

which means ms. francine don’t know what i’m talking about :) i’m saying the image have a soft blur on it, suspecting it’s being post processed after the capture. and i’m pretty sure all n70 are manufactured the same way.

I’ve got one of those cards for my 6680, a 1GB, and i’ve had no problems so far. What problems have you had?
Fird: Poor performance. My video recording jerks around (the framerate is horrible, like 5 fps or less). Any file operation-related process takes an awfully long time to complete.
What has the video quality got to do with the memory card? Surely a memory card can’t cause the video to have a low frame rate or be generally crap.
I’ve had no slowness as you mentioned, luckily.
Fird: Perhaps I’m unlucky. But it seems that there’s quite a number of people out there facing similar problems with this particular combination (N70 + Kingston 1GB). Some of them come across even worse condition – data corruption. However, I’ve never come across complaints from 6680 users with that particular card yet.
